I have had a frustrating week with dotmac and was looking at some solutions for backing up and syncing my data. As any experienced computer user knows, if you lose your data, you lose hours and hours of time, energy and resources. I purchased dotmac for this reason. However, dotmac went from “it sorta works” to “it does some of what it is supposed to do.” Not really a slogan. Before giving up, I am going to see if I get get some help from Apple’s Customer Support.
I have looked into backing up our files with an Amazon S3 Account but would be interested to hear how quickly you can access data. I recently saw this address book solution on the listserve. There are also Web 2.0 solutions available. I am interested in hearing what other users have tried to use for case files, iCal and Address Book backup solutions. Leave your solution in the comments or you can contact me off-blog.
Update: This has been the topic of discussion on one of the list-serves. So far, this and this have been mentioned.
Update: Interesting article here that inspires.

For iCal, I use Spanning Sync coupled with Google Calendar. It costs money, but it’s well worth it. Most of the time, I use the Google Calendar web interface because I am almost always online with my G4 Powerbook (soon to be upgraded to a new MacBook Pro). However, I need access to my calendar when I’m not online, so, I use Spanning Sync to keep my offline iCal up to date. The real bonus of this for me is that I can then sync my iCal to my iPod Touch which has become quite a handy tool for me.
For Address Book backups, I use Plaxo. I don’t really use Plaxo at all, but it is operating and backing up all of my contacts, so it’s just nice to know that I have peace of mind there. I used to use Plaxo’s calendar service for the same purpose – of backing up my iCal, but I find the Spanning Sync method preferable.
I’m waiting for Apple to update the Airport Extreme Airport Disk to be useable with Time Machine. Other than that, I do manual backups – not ideal.
I’ve never tried .mac.
